US troops kill Iraqi civilian in Amarah

An Iraqi civilian has been killed by US patrol fire in the southeastern city of Amarah, a military source in Amarah province has said.

"US forces killed an Iraqi civilian who was eating a meal on a sidewalk in the industrial zone in central Amarah," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on Saturday.

"The US soldiers believed that the man was trying to plant an improvised explosive device," he added. Amarah lies 390 km south of Baghdad.

The shooting incident by American soldiers is the second one after Iraq and the US signed an interim security pact which extended the presence of US forces in Iraq until the end of 2011.

Hadil Emad, a videotape editor with Beladi Satellite TV, was shot and critically wounded on New Year's Day in Baghdad.

The US military said the woman was acting suspiciously and failed to respond to warnings before she was shot.

However, Emad, who was going to work when she was shot, said the US soldiers who fired at her gave no warning.
